Information Technology Careers

I have a friend that would like to enter the IT field. His first choice was Computer Repair and as I asked questions there was an interest in other areas also. So based on what I heard I am providing a few links for him to explore below.

What are the various IT Occupations?

The Occupational Outlook Handbook provides a list of many job titles. The section on Computer and Information Technology Occupations includes many of the topics we talked about such as Computer Repair (Computer Support Specialists), Networking (Computer Network Architects), and Developers (Computer Programmers). Read through the occupations to determine which path interests you the most.

If I am interested in being a programmer, where can I start?

There are a LOT of ways to enter in the programming field and there are many terms such as front end developer, back end developer, database administrator, and more that you will hear. If you are not entering the field through obtaining a college degree, there are alternative paths. Below I will list a few. Many people have many opinions on these routes into the field, so please research them for yourself. My answers are going to focus on Web Development and WordPress.

  • The Web Developer Bootcamp, Colt Steele, (No PHP or MySQL)
    • As a person potentially interested in being a programmer, this course contains details on HTML, CSS, Javascript, and other things I don’t even know yet! But it also includes projects throughout that will allow you to practice your skills. Others have reviewed and state that this is an excellent course to learn front end development.
  • The Complete Web Developer Course 2.o, Rob Percival, (This course has WordPress, MySQL, and PHP).
    • This course, though it somewhat overlaps with the first one, includes PHP and MySQL. These are used by WordPress. You don’t have to know them to use WordPress, but if you want to take a product such as WordPress and take it further, these are the other two things that you need to be familiar with.
  • The Complete WordPress Development & Customization Course, Alexander Oni,
    • In this course, you will learn about WordPress, the fill structure, themes, and WordPress customization.

Are there any YouTube channels that show a developer’s journey?

Yes, there are plenty. Some of the channels have more bad language than others, but the essence of their journey is there if you can get past some of the language. You will need to look at earlier videos to see where they started.

How can I learn about WordPress?

WordPress is a content management system that does not require you to be a developer to use it. Below are a few links for using WordPress from the administrator/user perspective. The site that you are looking at was built using WordPress multisite.

Why Learn WordPress?

Well, there are organizations that use WordPress as their content management system (CMS) and for their website and blog. It is very easy to use and can be customized. It can be a website, blog, eCommerce store, membership site, and more than I even know. Check out this video to find out more.

Are there more resources?

Yes, there are. There are to many for me to post. But I will update this page as I find more resources that are applicable. ๐Ÿ™‚ Many of the courses above will refer to the links below. They are a great place to explore just to practice using the languages before you get started so that you can see samples of code and how they behave in a browser.

How can I practice coding on my computer if I don’t have a website?

You can use a product called MAMP. It lets you setup a webserver on your computer. Some items just require a browser, preferably Chrome, and an editor. Some of the editors available are:

If I have a website and need an FTP client, which one can I use?
